The Scottish Temperance Act of 1913 which allowed towns to hold a vote on whether to enact the Act. Stewarton held its vote in Nov 1919 which resulted in no public house licences being issued ie. the Town went “ DRY “ in May 1920. It was not until 7th Dec. 1961 that Stewarton became “ WET “ again. Up until then Stewartonians had to travel to Dunlop, Kilmaurs, or Kilmarnock if they wished a drink.
Prior to 1920 it is thought that Stewarton had around 11 public houses.
